No-dig / No-till vegetable garden beds | From start to planting 🌱

I’m in the process of converting an old unkept allotment into an ecologically managed ‘no dig’, or ‘minimal disturbance’ vegetable garden and it’s finally time to create the main growing beds.

The allotment had been dug over year after year, and the soil has sunk and degraded overtime. However, by mulching, instead of digging or tilling, we can mimic natural proccess and start to rebuild the soil structure and allow the myriad of like within to thrive, whilst creating a symbiotic relationship with the plants as they grow, increasing yields and boosting biodiversity. 🌱🌼🐝

There’s also far less weeds and effort once they are made. 😊🙌🏻 and ground beds are cheaper to make and are less likely to harbour pests than raised beds.

Why would you ever dig? 🌱

  2. I love your content and follow on IG. This particular method is that all that is needed as far as layering and then you can plant? For instance, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, green beans, herbs, etc?

  3. Finally getring my allotment after years of waiting. Can't wait to get cracking. I used to have small patch in my garden at my old house, but now can get cracking.

We started an allotment for my aunt a few years back the same way. But morning glory was a pain in the bum in the initial year. However with regular weeding it lost its vigour and eventually disappeared.

  4. Great video. I found you on IG after following Charles Downing, glad I found you. Excited to see more videos and learn. Can you do a video on organic pest control :). Do y'all have any animals?

  5. Dang.. I should have watched this before I killed myself digging my bed out with just a mattock and a shovel! I’ve got some other stuff still to plant so am going to give this method a try too 🙂

  6. I tried the cardboard, but it attracts to many bugs that eat up my plants roots. Plants that have a huge root system seem to do fine, but smaller plants like my lettuce and zinnias were demolished. The rolly polly's love the cardboard and small plant.

  7. What size is this plot and how many bulk bags of compost and wood chippings did you use? I’ve just inherited a very similar allotment so I’m trying to figure out how much I need to order

  8. Fascinating! I’ve watched much of Charles Dowding’s content, so this is very familiar to me. Love the idea of a roll of packing cardboard, so much easier than stripping down boxes. I would love to do this to my small garden, but we are plagued by cats owned by my various neighbours. That compost would be full of cat s—t overnight!

  9. Hey Jamie, loved the vid , nice to hear a northen accent, all i get here is french accents 🤣🤣🤣, i know you grow tons on your regular plot, i wondered if youve ever grown chaote , im trying it this year for the first time, so any prosand cons would be great, all the best from France ,,,, Dave

  10. Only two videos in, but I can tell this is going to become my favourite YouTube channel! Love everything you do on Instagram and am so excited for the longer form content 💚
