  1. My spring bunching onions were planted as a cluster like 10 years ago, and I got lazy one summer and didn't prune the bolts, now I have an everlasting spring onion garden, it literally cannot be killed, it just multiplys, so now I plant my tomatoes, carrots and sweet/yellow/reds and it's basically a onion factory, but I love it. I've had that spring onion patch for so long it'd kill me to remove it, it just spread it everywhere. All my neighbors are onion boiz like me now!

  2. in February I started Yellow Sweet Spanish, Zebrune (long banana shallot), RedWing, Red Tropea, and Patterson yellow storage, all from seed. A few weeks later I started Zittau onions from seed, a large German onion from Turtle Tree biodynamic farm. In the garden under straw are 4 varieties of garlic, plus a small white perennial onion "Shirley Hammond" which multiplies at the base, and giant Asian Green Onions which I grew from seeds over 15 yrs ago, they are going strong and I allow a few to self-seed. I never have any disease issues but I do rotate. I've tried the multi-sown method and still do some this way, but also some with single planting. All are in wide beds, as far as I can reach from each side. I have a path as wide as I can kneel, covered in old wood chips & leaves. Pelleted chicken doo-doo is awesome, also comfrey tea works wonders! Note on drying, must be done in the shade, which can be tricky, I have a small porch on East side of home, where I can spread them out and avoid sunburn. Porch on South side gets too sunny and bakes the onions too much. Thanks for your videos from North Central USA!

  3. I think I'm going to buy a dry erase board to keep track of everything I need to do to maintain my garden, and keep tabs on what animals are in season for hunting. Leftover animal parts will be ground up and turned into fertilizer.

  4. Oh I've already started my onion sets already and they've already sprouted Alot, should I pot them on as I take it it's to early to put out as frost and cold? I'm in Kent, love all your videos and tips, thanks ben

  5. I’m planning to grow in 2025 from seeds which I harvested from my flowering onion. Type I’m growing is white with very sweet flavour. That type of onion with some beefsteak tomatoes ( Cherokee purple) and drizzle of olive oil is to die for. Cannot wait for summer again 😊
Ben when is the best to start my onion seeds?

  6. I planted sets into a raised bed in October (can’t remember if I was supposed to plant them then but I did! 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣) and astonishingly most of them grew they’re about 15cm long now. Hopefully at least one succeeds!

  7. Question. I plant onions every year. Some years they turn out good others not so much. This past year, after drying thoroughly, I have some on the cold cellar with a rotten interior layer. My research states this is to soil bacteria. True? I also have several bulbs trying to grow into two separate bulbs. Cause and how to treat?

  8. I've got half a red onion that I forgot about in my fridge and it has started sprouting things from both ends.

I have a question… What happens if you do not harvest and instead leave the onions in the ground?

  9. I came up with an idea of growing it from the waste part – the actual stem of onion . It has germinated already. I am not sure about the outcome .. let’s see

  10. I read that the moon phase also influences the onions flowering. According to Old Farmers Almanac, planting bulbing seeds in the Waning of the Moon phase (when the moon goes dark), is the best way.

  11. I had a store bought red onion in the back of the cabinet that sprouted so I removed the outer layers and separated the individual bulbs and now I’m soaking them in water to help the roots grow a bit before planting in my raised bed gardens. I’ve never planted onions before, so this video was helpful to know what to expect and what to do. Thank you!

  12. I'm new to your channel and I actually just subscribed I found your video very helpful with the onions this is my first year growing vegetables ever from seedlings and I found it very informative

  13. My onions flop before mature size. What can that be ? I live in zone 8a. My tomatoes and salad greens next to them are happy . So it doesn't seem like they r not getting enough water or sun?
