Spring will be here before we know it and I desperately need to tick off the last of the Winter jobs from my to do list. These are all things that really need doing NOW so if, like me, you’ve yet to get around to them then I hope this video will help motivate and suppor
– Pruning the apple & pear trees (not soft/stone fruit trees)
– Pruning the roses (climbers, shrub, bush (floribunda and hybrid tea) – not species/ramblers)
– Sorting out the summer berry canes (summer fruiting berries fruit on the previous year’s growth – canes that fruited last year should be removed and new canes tied in)
– Greenhouse tidy and water (easy to forget in winter!)
– Planting garlic (hardneck and elephant here, but there are varieties that do better than others for late sowings)
– Pruning the hellebore orientalis foliage (to prevent the spread of hellebore leaf spot and allow light to the base for the new leaves – also better to see the flowers!)
– Checking on stored vegetables – e.g. garlic, onions and potatoes
Note – I still need to prune my currants, blueberries and the mulberry. Figs however are not pruned until AFTER the last frost.
It feels great to have got all of those things finally done and I feel much more ready for Spring now. It would have been nice to do some plot jobs too, but the weather was not playing ball! Plot content coming soon…
First early varieties –
Orla (best for size and taste)
Casablanca (came second for taste, good yield)
Red Duke of York (least yield, distinctive taste but not as buttery as the white earlies – wins prettiest potato though!)

Do you have any winter jobs left to do before Spring?
Happy birthday Dorie!!! 10 is a great achievement! Looking pretty spritely I might add! ❤🎉
Your last frost is only about a week earlier than mine! I think that's the closest I've seen on YouTube to my area. My daffodils are not anywhere near the size of yours. Mine are maybe 2 inch tall leaves right now. My tulips, crocus, hyacinth, rose bush, lilac, some vines that I don't know exactly what they are and my quince tree cuttings all have buds or a couple inches of leaves above the ground already. Our temps are high 50's (10 c) during the day and mid to high 30's (1 c) at night. I'm so crazy excited for spring. I have rosemary, parsley, pansy, canterbury bells, tomatoes, peppers hot and sweet started at this point. Tomorrow I will be making soil blocks for the first time and starting chives, forget me nots, snapdragons, moonflowers, carnations, african daisies, coleus and foxglove. I have been cleaning up my garden and yard the last about 3 weeks and since I'm growing in containers only this year I moved pots around and corralled them all to my fenced garden area so my dogs don't dig everything up anymore. Seed starting is the main growing thing I need to keep going on as my last frost comes up. I've been really working on my yard because this house was vacant for about 6 years before we moved in so I've been clearing the yard and cleaning up all the garbage that was left by the last people for the 2.5 years we have lived here. I'm getting closer to the end of all the clearing finally.
Great video, I enjoy getting all sorted at this time of year. Thanks for sharing, bfn. 🐞🌻🌱
Slow slow! Gardening is a relaxed pastime! Non urgent unless someone is having a cardiac arrest!
I really enjoyed this video and have subscribed. I found you after Ali at My Rusty Garden told me about your channel. I can’t wait to binge your videos 😊
Not boring at all Kerry, always good to be reminded of jobs that need doing now 😊 Great update as always 😊
I enjoyed the pruning – well, all but the roses! My chore as a child was following my father round our rose garden, painting a foul-smelling black substance on to the cut ends of the standard rose bushes as he pruned. Devilish stuff that wouldn’t wash out of clothes or off hands.
I grew a patio raspberry bush for the first time last summer but it didn’t do anything except send out a sucker, produce 3 berries which promptly rotted, and then died back.
I broke off the sucker and stuck it in a corner of the container and it has grown well, showing wee leaf buds today.
My question to you is how does one tell which are last year’s canes if there is no fruit visible?
Where did you buy your trellis from?
Loads in the green house ☺️
Haha broad beans watered… CHECK ✅
Bees! I saw one last week. Fab 🐝
Eric has a young apple tree in the home garden. I'll tell him you know what to do 😂 you cut that tree like I hacked my tomatoes last year 😂
Finally feel caught up after spending 3 hours today, in the sunshine, digging and weeding my allotment, wasn't as bad as I feared, mostly just annual weeds and grass. Lots of lovely surprises, as an awful lot of my perennial flowers, that I grew from seed and planted out last year as baby plants, have survived the winter and tripled in size, huzzah.
I have been chatting my potatoes. I am assuming they have first earliest. We will see! The poly tunnel survived, a few bent poles but secured them and placed the cover back on. If it blows away again I will call it good!
So glad I watched this – I had no idea that hellebores needed pruning. We've got some in the garden we moved into a few months ago.
Your back garden is getting all tidy. Very nice! Your wind is really blowing. I lost my poly tunnel yesterday from wild gusts of wind. Hope your stay safe. Nice potato harvest. Were they your first or second plantings? ❤❤❤
omg the exciting tatter reveal was so funny lol I'm getting on with clearing the new border and I measured it and its 32 feet long 5 feet wide I reckon my garden is half plot size lol its even longer on the other side cso this has the tardis shed on it lol
I've still all the roses and pear and apples to do, plus a few hedges 😂😂 it would take a week to catch up. Good to get those clearing jobs done. A gardening book in one and secateurs in the other hand 😅
I was on the edge of my seat when you went climbing over the pond 🫣🫣 phew that was intense 😂
Delighted for those large potatoes 🥔….I did rewind…did she say 1st earlies?? 😂 thats a long storage time 😊
Have a great weekend 😘🤗
Not boring😊after 20 min of your film I went to garden ,all my trees are done and I was trying to do it since long ❤
Isn't it made soon it will be summer and you're be well off
I saw 2 big bumble bees today too!! 🙂
Just so you know, pruning content is fantastic content for some of us. I could watch pruning videos ALL day so thank you for providing me with some 😂
Great video, can I ask how you keep your dog from eating your plants? Mine has just munched my early broad beans!
Bizzier
Oooooo! I only get pests and Kerry gets bees
Great informative video Kez- I’ve checked that Banksia Lutes and it does say rambling rose which flowers on stems that are 2/3 years old!!! So dont prune unless damaged – oops I may have sacrificed flowers this year then!!! Stupid plant labels and AI search confusing me!!
You did do a lot of work to your berries – well done- looks great now!
Big garden. You are hard work. Greate video.
Well done Kerry lots of jobs done today 👍
Fabulous potato harvest no wonder you were so excited! ❤ xx
Great work on the raspberries! Is it easy to tell which canes have fruited?
I had some squigy potatoes and chitted them instead of eating, the grew fairly well.
Pruning is something I actually like, I get to know the trees, bushes, canes and look for any disease indications.
Snow is melting, but we are still far from being able to work the soil.
I have plenty of inside jobs though.
Great potato harvest.
Happy Bday D!
Happy birthday Dorie!!! Hope mum spoiled you rotten ❤
A great vlog, lots of giggles 🤭 Plus, a bucket load of anxiety when you navigated the pond 😳😂
You've inspired me with something. I am going to redo my indoor grow area. I'm wondering now, if I can grow potatoes during the winter.
Happy 10th birthday to Dorie🌱💚🌿
Hi Kerry, I’m reasonably new to your channel (found you via Danny!). I have watched you move allotment plots. This will be my first growing season as a viewer. I suspect your home garden is absolutely gorgeous. I’m looking forward to seeing it bloom! All the best from Australia 🇦🇺
Yes my first bee 🐝 yesterday 🎉🎉. Happy birthday Dorie you don’t look a day over 3 🤭🤭. Ok I will need to check my apple tree now it’s stopped raining 👍. 😂😂 17:02 did you say a little bit of room. The next insanity step is seed shuffles. Mummmmmm I want to play. Great update Kerry ❤ happy gardening, Ali 🥶🌥️🇨🇦
Happy 10th birthday Dorie ❤️❤️❤️🥂
Well. After spending the last 26 minutes with you, I feel the need to neck a bottle of whisky 🥃 😂❤️🥃xxx
23:32 off of 🚨 🤦❤️
You’re going to turn into an elephant garlic 😂❤️
The greenhouse has never been cleaned. I’ve now got quite used to it like this. Oh ffs! She can’t even count 3… 🤦❤️
Pruning boring? Not when you’re wielding secateurs around the garden 🤦❤️
“I could see some old fruits!” I beg your pardon!? How dare you! 🤦😂❤️🥂
You look dangerous with those secateurs 🤦❤️🥂
Hi Kerry whaat do you use to spray on your sheers to clean / disinfect them .garden looking much better 👍
