Why Every Vegetable Garden Needs Ducks

I constantly get asked about how I deal with slugs, especially because I am in a wetter part of the UK and there is plenty of grass around – even our garden paths are grass! So I thought I would make a quick video as a reference to my answer on how we deal with slugs here. If there is enough interest I will then make a very detailed video on all the steps needed in terms of looking after ducks, choosing the right breed, when to use them etc.

  1. I have 25 ducks. Trust me, they are the best backyard companion! If you are ever having a bad day, go outside and watch the ducks, you’ll laugh and feel much better in no time

  2. I had a vole problem. When I found the nest, I turned the chickens lose. They enjoyed the baby voles.

My ducks were trained to run over the driveway and into the garden.

They are very “social” and consummate the marriage every morning. Then they hit the pond. Then they go on weed and pest control.

At the end of the day, they line up to go home in the chicken/duck house. It’s a race to get the best sleeping quarters for the night.

  3. Forgot to mention that ducks are literally the cutest bird to ever exist! they are entertaining and funny! They honk which i absolutely love. And ducks are permanently smiling😭.

If you wanna add some joy to your life get a duck. They put a smile on my face everyday!

  4. The sad problem with ducks is that they are an easy target for dogs and especially evil FOXES .Unless you have a fox proof cage and can keep an eye on them when roaming they will almost certainly be lost to foxes. A good guard dog can help in keeping the ducks safe .

  5. There are a couple of big ponds near our property in our township, and one of them is a park. I would LOVE to get a couple of ducks that can fly, that I can raise from babies and have them come to my garden and yard to take care of the bugs and slugs!

  6. Well we have two runner duck. They needed onley one summer to kill off our snale population. Yeey for my plants🥳. But k ow they eat all my brasicas 🤔. Back to the beginnîng. 🤷‍♂️

  7. I love my ducks and they really love to search out the bugs. They will eat any kind of bugs. They sound like they are laughing and giggling. They are best in groups of 4 or more. They have very fast growth rates and just about double in size each week. They go absolutely bonkers over peas, it’s their favorite veggie treat.

  8. Sounds like a good idea for your allotments to have a "duck master(or keeper)" to rotate his ducks around the properties every couple of days in a different location so the owners don't have the responsibilities of caring for the ducks but for a small contribution for feed get the benefit of their services! Nice business for someone.
