In this episode I describe all different kinds of netting and garden row cover that I use on my plot.
These are essential for any organic, sustainable gardener and provide alternative to pesticide by preventing insects from getting to your veggies in first place.
VeggieMesh is in my opinion the best cover I had thus far prevents Carrot Fly, Cabbadge White Butterfly, Alium Leaf miner, Cabbage Moth altought keep in mind that this is not 100% guaranteed.
If you want to be sure to avoid any insects grow in polytunnel.

Very helpful video mate. Just got myself allotment plot and I know I’m going to need mesh protection
Netting is great until you realise you are responsible for the death of a trapped bird.
No crop is worth the life of an animal.
Really helpful and well explained. Thanks so much
Hi, can you please suggest low budget net to protect vegetable garden from rodents/ rats and can be easily made at home.
Thanks for this. I see it was posted in 2016 and now it is 2019. I found this very helpful, just as I was about to purchase netting, to decide which to buy. Really clear, well paced delivery and explanation. Thanks!!
Great info on covers. Your garden looks very well tended.

I'm trying to avoid squash vine borers from attacking my squash plants this coming summer. I'm considering buying an insect net but what about pollinators???
that's great – thanks for sharing. Can I ask where you got the blue piping from to raise/hold up your netting? thx.
A lot of good information there Raf. I was surprised that the Cabbage Moth laid it's eggs it's eggs through the mess. Here I have only ever seen the eggs on the underside of the leaf.
great job !! great update !! great information !!
Hi Raf,lots of good info.Everything is looking nice.Take care Jane.
Hello Raf, I would imagine that Enviromesh is heavier than Debris netting and I have had Butterflies lay eggs through the debris netting onto the leaves, which I removed promptly. Thankyou for sharing.
Terry.
Hi Raf! It looks like the covers are working well. Your plants look great!
Hi, Raf, Thanks for taking the time to share so much useful info. I do not have as many choices here.
I use lacecurtains (from IKEA) to protect my cabbage, over hoops made by old waterhoses. Works very well!
Katarina from Sweden (hence the curtains from IKEA…)
Hi Raf. Great video. I've always wondered about different types of fleece for different plants where it benefits and/or protects plants. Thank you for a brilliant update Raf. Going to save this video for next year. Takes Care, Andy & Karen.
Good info, Like anything you have to do what works for you and what you can afford a lot of the times, Amazing the number of products that are other there, And none of them are available here….lol
Thanks Raf. Very helpful.
I netted the strawberries which helped. I am now also using netting on my young brassica but once they get established this will be removed and my bird scarers will kick in
Thank you for the great video, i needed that! I have bird netting on the strawberries but nothing else is netted at the moment. I can not find the finer stuff for a good price but at least i know what i'm looking for now because i will need some for my onions next year. The allium leaf miner shredded my entire onion bed. My cabbages are doing ok out in the open. I have birds taking care of the caterpillars but obviously they can't catch them all so they look a little ragged but not too bad. The slugs do worse damage there. Still a weird thing to know in the UK some birds will actually eat the vegetables. I have never seen that. They will grab the fruit when they can but not greens. I have lure trees for the blackbirds and pigeons, 2 elderberries and a sour cherry. That keeps them busy. the pigeons are actually my helpers. I collect woodshavings with rabbit manure from the pet shop and it always has tons of spilled food and seeds in it. Twice every week i spread it out on the grass, they riddle through it all day and i suck it up with the lawnmower and use the clean woodshavings and rabbit manure as a mulch. Now lets see what i can give the blackbirds to do, they are my most hated garden pest. Worse than slugs. They turn over every scrap of mulch and earthed up potatoes in the garden, looking for worms, hurting my smaller plants in the process. They are everywhere now the young birds are maturing. All digging. I need a couple of fake cats or owls or something.
