Will These Plumbers Properly Fix a Water Heater Leak?

Can these repairmen fix a simple water heater leak or will they try to sell us an expensive replacement? Inside Edition rented a house in Montclair, New Jersey, for an entire month, tricking it out with cameras and then calling the fix-it guys to see what happened. The footage was transmitted in real time to a remote command post. In Inside Edition’s second installment in a special series of investigations, we created a simple water heater leak, then called a variety of different plumbers to see what they would do. #InsideEdition

  1. To be fair to the guy that IS the cause of a leak 99.9999% of the time. Those unions don't all of a sudden become loose. My verdict.. not a scammer.

  2. They have a flexible supply line on the cold side and they have it hard piped on the hot side. The install is a total hack job. It's an old water heater. As a plumber myself, I wouldnt touch it without replacing the water heater and surrounding piping. Why? Because the risk of me getting called back 2 days later because "it's leaking again and the plumber was just here" is wayyyy too high.

Not saying I agree with lying and saying it's cracked, but as an honest plumber I certainly would be telling them to get a new one as well.

  3. AMC (ATLANTIC MECHANICAL
Contractors Plumbing Heating Cooling) from Nutley, NJ ripping people off since 1987…🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️

  4. I’m in the ac/heating business….this is how I go about stuff like this: ……Here’s the problem and repair, however this thing should really be replaced since it’s close to twenty years old. We can
    A. Leave it the way it is.
    B. Repair it
    C. Put the money towards a new one.
Customers looooooove the honesty and I’ve gotten all the above responses.

  5. I wish they would mention the name of the honest companies as well for publicity. Especially the one company that didn't even charge a service fee. I understand it's a business and they have to make money, but not charging a service fee to just look at it is almost unheard of.

  6. I have been a plumbing contractor for almost 40 years. My father's uncle started me in the business, and he told me, early on, that if you have to lie and cheat people, you do not possess skills or integrity. It's a business that requires honesty and trustworthiness. His favorite saying was: sell customers everything they need, and nothing they do not need.

  7. I’ve literally installed hundreds of water heaters and I’ve never seen a water heater cracked on top or down the sides. However I have seen water heaters rusted out on the bottom and gushing plenty of water. Also if the water heater wasn’t leaking before then it probably is now because they kept tightening and retightening the water line over and over again. Those rubber gaskets and threads do not like that.

  8. None of this surprises me. While most are honest, there's enough out there that are not only dishonest but plain lazy or incompetent. Especially with small jobs, I've found some get irritated and consider those little things a waste of time. And they'll charge accordingly. The old school plumbers are a rarity now. There is more pressure to sell, so even a perfectly working water heater, if it's over about 10 years old, many will suggest a replacement. Even if it might have several years of service life left.

  9. It will not stop until there are stiff penalties (ie… deterrence) against this kind of fraud. As it stands, they'll just bounce to the next victim – no harm no foul. There should be police there on the ready to arrest them for fraud.
