One of the things I love about my garden is how it evolves across the seasons. With spring upon us, let me show you the 5 things that are bringing me joy in my garden right now!

5. My Narcissus (daffodils) planted in groups.
4. One of my favourite climbers, Actinidia with its distinctive white and green leaves.
3. Topiary Shadows – the low sun creates wonderful effects when it hits the box and yew in my garden
2. Tulips – This time of year they are a riot of colour and I love them in pots.

But top of the list (1!) is my glorious cherry blossom tree, the Prunus “Shirotae”. Although it’s not been without its problems this year! Cherry blossoms are a great addition to any garden and here I show you how to choose your own cherry tree for your garden with two great examples Prunus “Starlight” and Prunus “Serrulata”.

So what have been your spring garden highlights? Comment below and let me know!

  1. Freesia Freesia Freesia!! Come and go Soooo quickly. Wish I could save their fragrance in a bottle. What is that clear Ball in the center of your garden outside of your greenhouse?? Do you take photos of just your garden ? Have a book? So Beautiful!! Thank you

  2. I love these snippets of your garden, though I wish your videos were longer. My roses are starting to open, my geums have been blooming for ages now, my aquilegias are divine, my peonies are all getting ready, my choisya is gorgeous & smells beautiful too – like honey. And the solitary bees are busy at my bug hotel.

  3. The wood pigeons ate my damson blossom too. Alan, what plant is the topiary with the hole please? Box? It’s stunning. Thanks so much for these videos and congratulations on your new role for NGS.

  4. So many spring highlights for me. My prunus kanzan cherry was spectacular as well as my daffodils and tulips ( I planted hundreds of bulbs in containers). My magnolia also out on a good show and my camellias including one which finally flowered again since being damaged in the summer heat wave of a few years ago. Now it’s time for my peonies and roses.

  5. Last year I started some Alyssum and in Spring put it everywhere… I was ill this year and couldn't start anything and felt so defeated…. until I was finally well enough to go out last week and found Alyssum, daisies, four clocks, Cosmos, forget me nots and coreopsis had seeded themselves all over with help of rain, birds a messy gardener and God😊
Beautiful start to the year! Happy Gardening! It is never as rough as it seems❤

  6. Spectacular, but I’ll bet you use herbicides. Every gorgeous garden I’ve seen is laden with years of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, poisonous to us and every little bird that stops to pick up an insect or seed. I can’t bring myself to use the sprays so my garden which would otherwise be magazine cover pristine, has the unsightly grasses growing in almost everything. There’s only one solution I know of which somehow reduces the weeds and that is to apply about a 5 inch layer of washed horse manure. Well who wants that job?! But the extraordinary growth and health of the plants under that microflora blanket was amazing. If anyone has a solution other than the corn based treatment in early spring which kills all seeds, or a plastic sheet under your plants, please enlighten me.

  7. My garden is a war zone. Muntjac at the top, removing tulips and roses they breed twelve months a year no manners or self control Next the pigeons stripping blossom. Smaller birds digging in soft earth in the pots, also pulling up young plants. By the way can I let rip about pigeons, we never used to have them , but now…. They bonk all year round, their so called nests are a disgrace, a few twigs in a casual pile, poo everywhere, also have you seen their young? They are horrendous, like something from a horror movie . Look at the little birds nests, works of art. New born hens are so cute. Our native deer keep a discreet distance, only breed once a year, lovely. Thank you for your patience. Patricia Norfolk Uk
