I need your help and advice! I’m having some problems with my peppers under the grow lights at home. I suspect it is edema, caused by air flow and humidity problems. Or it could be an issue with moisture retention of the compost I have used to pot them up.
The pepper plants do look quite healthy though, despite the issues I will mention. They are actually needing potting on, and will suffer if this isn’t done soon! they’ve grown so fast!
BUT I don’t really have the space to pot them on at home, so the big move to the polytunnel may be coming soon, but let me know your thoughts!
I’d like to say a huge thank you to the now 12,000 gardeners who are now a part of the Down To Earth community! Your support means so much and is greatly appreciated! Let’s all have a great growing season and share our successes and failures with one another 💚
Cheers!

A small amount is expected, especially with sweet peppers. I’ve had it every year. One thing I’ve tried this year which does seem to have drastically reduced it is not potting up too big too fast. Previously I would go from agralan cell (about a fingers width), to the 3 x 5 containerwise to the size you’re currently in. This year I’ve gone agralan to 5 x 8 to 3 x 5. Almost zero signs of edema.
Flowers are because they need potting on.
They have filled the space and concentrating on reproduction.
de humid…..is dragging moisture out of the leaves…..need planting and protecting
When can chillis be put in a polytunnel
Residue from the chemicals in your tap water lime scale calcium etc 😊
Its Edema, too much humidity, a fan helps i find
Wow 12 k Jim awesome work. Looks like adema too much water 💦, but easily fixable. You’ll get it sorted we totally have faith in you. Have a super week, Ali 🌞🇨🇦
Have you got a cold? You sound all snuffly like Pootle off The Flumps.
Easy. It's over watering. 100%.
I have a similar problem but on the leaves of my tomatoes.
Those little bumps on the leaves.
But I think it is because the weather has been very warm the last few days and the room where they are, has reached 26 degrees Celsius.
I am also thinking about planting my peppers and tomatoes soon in the greenhouse to prevent these kinds of problems.
I think you are right, they just need potting on, especially with them starting to flower,
~ of course, I could be wrong!!
That is plant edema.
It is a combo of the plants getting too dry then lots of water dumped on them, and stale humid air around them
I've taken a risk and put 4 peppers and 3 aubergine in the cold frame to see if they live! (Just to make room for more stuff) So far so good but cold nights are forecast even though the days are warm so fingers 🤞.
Looks like they are ready and don’t want to wait much longer.
I have the same problem with some of my chilli or pepper plants
Swollen lenticels
Jim looks like edema.
I have exactly the same this year with jalapenos being the worst affected. I also learnt a lot last year so was very careful not to over water this year and let them dry out a bit. I think the problem is something to do with temps & air flow and the plants haven't been able to respire sufficiently . I have been putting some of mine outside during the day for the last week and that really seems to be doing the trick. They did wilt on the first day after an hour or so but some water and shade soon sorted them out and they seem to be doing good again with lots of new growth and the old leaves dying back.
Nothing to worry about, might be a tad much humidity, watering and fertilizer, will sort themselves out when they start growing in bigger containers/ bed in the greenhouse.
Overwatering don't panic
