Filling tall raised beds full of quality garden soil will cost some serious moolah!
Here’s how to do it for a fraction of the cost and build the quality of your soil over time as the base layers break down adding organic matter to the bed.
Don’t be surprised if you need to add more compost/soil each year as the bed settles and compacts. That’s totally normal.

Like I get it dude, but it's also great to have a foundation of rich soil, when you are prepping over the winter definitely do all this, but I was more than happy to get some fresh healthy soil. Also get some worm castings y'all
Use dead logs and big branches along with compost and cardboard.
Awesome! I’m gonna do this when I can. Though I wonder if it wouldn’t be safer to use untreated cardboard? Idk what those Amazon packages are encountering in the factory. Thanks for sharing!
>buys $1000 garden bed instead of building one for 1/10th the cost
>here's how to save money
Don't use grass cuttings they will smell like sewage for months 😮
What brand you used for compost
I dont know everything, just throwing my 2 cent in
I would have mix the leaves with the soil and keep some to throw on top
Also think about what u want to grow and how deep the roots go make sure there not a whole wood layer just few bits, or that cardboard blocking it🤔 also think u supposed to soak that and dirt as u go along the log, if have a bin could just leave it in the water over a day or so
1 tonne of composted soil was $80? I put roadbase on the bottom and have a buried worm farm to keep the soil in check. The worms are $50 for 1000 $80 is not much?
Water. Soak that cardboard before adding each layer. Water between additions. Human urine will aid decomposition. Add some manure. Leaf mold fir the win!!
Nice.
I have a question…aren't the buried leaves and grass clippings going to turn into compost and thus create alot of heat? When turn my compost pile, it's steaming hot in the middle even on a cold day. That heat can't be good for plants and roots.
I didn't know they came that large, my mother has much smaller ones in her garden. It was a pain trying to fill those 3 up
Water every level while filling it in to help stuff settle better or you’ll get sinkholes if you just water the last top layer
Be careful with grass clippings, I went “easy” on them and that whole summer stank and the plants in that particular bed did terrible.
I'm hearing if you use wood chips…or in this case whole branches…the soul will get too acidic.
that's gonna sink down another inch and a half as it rains.
Obviously, Obviously, not an organic garden bed. With grass clippings that no doubt have fertilizer and chemicals Good luck with that
You just made giant compost bins!!! For the technique to work its LOGS ONLY, then soil. you added organic material that will break down turning these into giant compost bins.
😊
i have used a pool noodle to put on the top rim of the planter to protect the children from being cut
I want to get some more of these raised beds. What source did you use to buy these beds ?
I went out into my back woods and raked up many wagons full of forest floor. I laid it out in a large container and added water with each layer. Within 6 months the dirt was so rich with mushrooms and earth worms and I spread it around all my fruit trees.
All the glues in that cardboard
I did that also it shrink drastic to the bottom and I add lots of soil to it shrink shrink,it take time to be perfect ❤
Вау!❤🔥🎉🎉🎉
Люблю ваш канал и ваши советы!👍👍👍
Я живу в Подмосковье
У нас не продают такие сборные, высокие грядки
Приходится самой сооружать из досок😂😂
I live in NC and think I would do a layer of peat moss to help keep moisture
I recommend you put down wire then the carboard. Mine attracted moles/voles and chipmunks and lord knows whatever ground borer. I added metal to the bottom of mine and this stopped them from attacking/eating my roots/plants as they could not get through the metal.
How long do I have to wait to plant after I water the soil. I’m worried I’m going to under water or over water my plants
I love this way of gardening, saves you a lot! Thanks for sharing my friend. You're teaching the little ones how to garden and save money at the same time.❤😊🎉
Yet another person putting logs in a raised bed. The microbes will require a ton of nitrogen to break them down. Any guess where they'll get it? Yep, the soil. Don't do this. My source is Robert Pavlis
Elevated beds…completely unnecessary and needs to replace the soil.
You'll have weeds growing like crazy with them damn leaves
Thanks for sharing 🎉
Your 95% there, unfortunately there's going to be an obscene amount of settling after planting and growing commences. Which will impact your initial planting in some negative way. Best to build this way 6+ months in advance, leave surface covered to keep it fresh and weed free while you wait.
I have in many cases used ONLY grass clippings and leaves. It grows absolutely anything from tomatoes to potatoes with very little watering because grass clippings hold water well.
Oh didn’t know u had a youtube channel. I follow on insta
Are these beds better than wooden ones or just preference?
I absolutely love how the kids are helping, and happy to be doing it.
What if money isn’t a constraint
They need to do a video for those that don't have wood laying around
Waste of time, money, and resources going any deeper than an eight inch vegetable bed. Study after study both long and short term confirms. The key is the soil quality not how high you can fill a bed with junk. Even worse cardboard isn't safe for humans especially kids. Dozens of harmful chemicals used in North American processing and no way to know with imported.
Can you use compost underneath instead?
My city provides it for free.
Thank you! I was trying to figure this out. Lol. I have wood chips at the bottom with leaves and pine straw on top of that. Next will be top soil and mushroom compost and then another layer of soil. Can't thank u enough. I was concerned! Hahha
And when break down, it will be less than quarter full😮
Don't grass clipping cause grass to grow in your beds?
Oops.

Those raised beds don't just need to be a garden. They would make a great compost bin for a person's homestead.
