Can I also use citric acid for the bowl?
Bleach wouldn't be good for the rubber seals
You must NEVER use beach to do this as it will eat away any metal parts in your toilet , plumbers will even tell you this . Use Citric Acid , it will remove the stains but it will not harm any metal parts .
If you have a septic system Clorox is not recommended.
Is citric acid in different percentages?
I'm not familiar with using it.
Tks !
Where to buy citric acid powder?
Home depot and Lowes said they didn't have it.😢
Plumbers will tell you to never put bleach in your toilet for the reason that you said about it ruining the seals. Glad to see it didn't work so now we know not to do it!😊
Love this cleaning trick! I have used it on four toilets and it works magnificently!❤
For best results scrubbing is inportant I put citric acid in a spray bottle and spray directly on the stains after flushing the water and scrub for 5 mins and u got a clean tank
So, one thing I don't see in the video, the description, or the top comments is one important safety tip. Another thing that chlorine bleach reacts with: CITRIC ACID! For anyone thinking to use both products together to get better results, DON'T! It will make the chlorine gas that was talked about. Hopefully, nobody has hurt themselves in the four years since this video was posted.
i don't think bleach is useful as a soak cleanser, but what do i know? I do know that i tried citric acid and it got all of the gunk from the bottom of my rental toilet super easy. I just dumped it in the tank while I was doing other things to get the rental in good order and all i had to do was flush. no scrubbing or anything
Why do you have to empty the cistern? Can't you use the water that is already in it?
Citric acid can be bought economically on the market for pickling vegetables where they have spices, vanillin, etc. I don't know if you have such in America. It is made in China. 1 kg currently costs €8. I think this "ball" jar is overpriced, as are their canning products. I would be more economical with it. Use less and dissolve it in the bucket. Then you can rinse the water tank with a hose. Rip that stupid sticker of that tells you not to clean it.
Americans don't seem to know the chemistry and are afraid of anything called "acid". Big corporations can take advantage of this selling watered down products. It's always soda and vinegar in advice.
I think I’ll need a little more than citric acid or bleach in ours. We’re on a well in the country and get a LOT of gunk that comes through the pipes when we have a power outage any longer than a couple hours and the water sits in the pipes throughout the system. When the power comes back on and water starts flowing again it brings a lot of gunk into the house and plugs everything that has a filter or screen that we have to clean out and or replace screens and filters. But the tank doesn’t have something like that and the dirty water sits in the tank and turns in a thick sludge that has to be scraped out. But this should help with the rest after we suck the sludge out!
BonAmi powder is great for toilet stains, neglected tubs etc. Its all I need 😉
Hi Andrea, would like to sugest you could mix the Citric Acid or the Clorox in the bucket with water, insted trying mix in the toilet bowl.
I have to share this. After your video I had Citric Acid on my shopping list. I normally use Lysol bowl cleaner but I had a bottle of Dollar General Toilet bowl cleaner and I decided to try it. I found that if I add about a quarter of the bottle to the tank and let it set for a couple hours (while everyone is sleeping) then flush it and I was AMAZED at how clean the tank became with NO SCRUBBING. I’d like to add after pics but I don’t see that option. I only wish I had thought to take before ones. Sorry but it was brown with a definitive deposit line. I’ve seen many tips & tricks online but none completely remove those dreadful stains and some require at least some hands on scrubbing but not this one. I couldn’t believe it. Now the bowl will stay clean and require less work. I’m doing the main bathroom toilet tank tonight. Hey, you gotta enjoy the small victories in life. Try it for $1.25 it’s well worth it. The Ball brand Citric Acid is $5.43 at our Walmart so the DG Toilet cleaner at $1.25 is way cheaper and it left zero residue.

Would using baking soda + white vinegar a better choice for cleaning the toilet tank with some scrubbing, especially for vintage toilets? Thoughts?
Can i use lemon juice instead of citric acid powder?
Fake video – there r 2 different flush tank shown… Check the orange lables , in one it has "Warning" instruction clearly read, other it's not possible to read
Citric acid for everything – coffee machine, washing machine, dishwasher, kettle, even toilet tank.
Which section in the grocery store would I be able to find citric acid?
Wow I hope I can find it or I will order yeahhh
Does it kill the mold ??
Just for the record, some men clean toilets too. Like me.
U should try powdered citrus acid and oxy clean!!!!!!!
I agree. I've used both in the past but once I used citric acid, I've never gone back to bleach. The results are hugely in favour of citric acid.
I cannot believe this worked!! I just bought a house and the previous owners didn’t clean a THING and the toilet tanks looked AWFUL!
I bought a bag of citric acid after seeing this video, set a 1hr timer and came back to a completely white toilet tank!! THANK YOU!!
Ive used Coke a Cola before and it works well. Expensive, though as you need to fill bowl with undiluted (left over water from flush to empty OK). Takes 2 2 liter bottles, or multiple, dep on starting point. Imagine what it does to stomach! Haven't yried other sodas, but …
Works so well. I have new toilet tanks and bowls! Wish I’d known about citric acid on my last acreage. Thank you!
Make sure you're in a well ventilated area … move your toilet if you need to. 😂
Anyone tried baking soda?
Baking soda and vinegar 👌🏽
Great information thank you! It’s really bothered me having rust and iron stains in the toilet tank. I just don’t understand why toilet manufacturers don’t make it lined or sealed for easy cleaning and maintenance.
Don't use bleach if you have a Septic system…
I am wondering if that black line near the top and black floaters or tiny pieces of black are from a deterioration of the black floating ball – is that possible and if so is it time to replace that ball? (my toilets at least 17 years old)
The citric acid wont damage the parts?
Gonna try this! I have sulfur water
Hi Andrea, I just cleaned the inside of our toilet tank with Citric Acid. OMG what a difference!! It looks brand new!! Thank you for your recommendation and tip!!
I used wht.vinger a little brush wait 2 flush about 15min.jets are clean tank is fine!! I would think the citric acid would affect those rubber rings in the bottom of the toilet tank so I'm going this route with the white vinegar it's fine the Jets are clean inside of the tank isn't spic and span but a lot of junk came off I'll do this once in a while I can see where the rubber rings would be affected on the bottom of the tank
Does this acid hurt any of the parts inside the tank????
It won't damage the flapper or anything that bleach will corrode ?
The bleach just bleaches the color, you still need to scrub the sides. Use a $1 Plastic Kitchen Dish/Glass Brush.
Looks better
