Autumn is the perfect time to start planting veg for harvesting next spring. If you get some crops in now you’ll be able to harvest them several months before the crops you’ll be planting next year!
In this video I show you how I do it, planting two varieties that I love – onions and garlic. My secret to success is planting them in a planter rather than in the ground. In a tall planter, water drains away better than a compacted border so you reduce the risk of the ground waterlogging and your crops being ruined. If you’ve never tried it before or have a small garden its a great way to do it.

I'm working with adults with learning disabilities and I'm in charge of gardening. This channel will teach me so much. Thanks Alan. New subscriber😊
Just found the channel❤ new subscriber 😊
Worth pointing out, that the overwintering onions, excellent though they are,do not store well, so for eccentric gardeners like me who insist on providing onions 365 days a year, a maincrop spring variety is essential.(I also supplement by growing Welsh,Egyptian Walkers, and potato onions ,these are perrenial, the large Japanese bunching onions are good for cooking too.)
It is worth starting both maincrop and overwintering varieties by seed, if you have time ,and are gardening on a budget.
I always start and over winter the garlic in modules, probably unnecessarily, I just like to watch it grow!

Hi Alan would it work planting them in the greenhouse in a tray to protect them from the frost and cold? 🧅 🧄
I so appreciate your attitude toward Autumn. I remember in a program, years ago, called The Seasons where you said Fall was not so much an ending – but a time of rest and healing. How lovely. 😌
I plant my garlic and onion sets in those takeaway clear cups with the domed lids.
Once they've grown on a bit I plant the "plugs" into their intended bed.
Brilliant teaching and knowledge, thankyou. My garden is a dark one but I'm going to try onions and garlic now as the video gives me the confidence (Im renowned for veg failures 😂)
I'm looking forward to giving this a go. Thank you Alan 😊
Hello Alan some great information I do enjoy watching your videos
I subscribe to your channel and I love each video. With all your advice, information, it makes you want to garden. Thank you very much Alan and regards Hello de France 🧓💙🤍❤
I wish I had seen this first, I planted mine out last week.
I have had an allotment now eight years, and the autumn sown onions never produce a crop because without fail, they bolt. Nevertheless I enjoyed the video. Now, do I try one more time ……….
Plant them in the greenhouse.
From years of experience, red onion sets planted in autumn almost invariably bolt. Have never had a problem with blackbirds.
Just got myself a micro allotment and your videos are great for me as a new learner.
Im curious, why don't you grow onions from seed? Just sets?
Hi Alan, great to see winter crops being planted. What an excellent way to store your onions. Tying them up and hanging them in the garden shed. 🧄
Could ypu grow them in a polytunnel?
Wow, great tips but if i used the little terracotta pots to weigh down the fleece I'd have lots of broken crocks to use in next year's potting up 😂❤
Alan, you are SUCH a motivator. Guess what I’m doing this weekend … ? ☺️
I always get so many helpful ideas from your vids, Mr. Titchmarsh! The raised bed is the technique I use too, adapting it to keep birds/bugs at bay as needed, and this year, fleece to protect it all. I love your shed! Thank you for another fabulous and informative guide to growing! 🌻🌞
Thankyou Mr Titchmarsh. A gentle instructive video. I have never planted onions in the autumn. I always did planting on the old allotment in the spring.. you are so right about the blackbirds. I have watched them basically play football with sets I had just planted..then they watched me replant them..Thanks again I look forward to these little videos, they cheer me up and give little tips I definitely didn't know.🌺
You make gardening look so easy and fun! ❤
This is such a clear and practical guide for the autumn gardener! The tip about planting onion sets just below the surface to deter blackbirds is a game-changer I’ll be using immediately. Love the raised bed method and the insurance policy of a seed tray. Fantastic advice, as always. Can't wait for that early summer harvest
Thanks for the tips great idea alan beautiful garden shed 🌿🪴
