English Vegetable Garden in Autumn | Surprise Harvest

We are moving headlong in towards Winter now. The weather is noticeably cooler at night and the whole garden is getting that slightly dishevelled and untidy look about it that happens in autumn, before the big clear up is complete. I’m not sad about this, it’s normal to observe the life cycle of the kitchen garden winding down, giving way to thoughts and plans for the next season.

In this episode I harvest some cabbages, a surprise harvest in one bed as the cabbages re-grew after harvesting in summer. I also harvest a giant pumpkins with my granddaughter and all of my peppers and chillies.

There’s some weeding to do, as the weeds have really taken over this last month.

The autumn (or fall) reset is quite a common idea in the home and garden sector. Packing away the summer chairs and cushions from the garden, setting out the autumnal colour accents around the home. It made me realise the garden is the same. The colours of autumn are slowly creeping in, as the lush vibrant greenness of summer is replaced by yellow and browning leaves and our kitchen gardens or allotments start to wind down at the end of a truly magical growing season.

  1. I love the comparison between our cabbages – esp when yours were a second flush!! 😂😂😂 That pumpkin was huge and strange how it cured – I didn't think the one you gave me last year did that. Great carvings! Got mine to do this week…

  2. Beautiful harvests and surprises, Clare! 😁 I have to say that brassica cage is absolutely amazing, they are huge! I love the aerial picture. It puts everything in perspective. And I'm so glad the pond cleared up. Hopefully, the geese will return?

  3. All it has done here is rain, Clare. So annoying, especially as I'm building a new pond. All the mud is sticking to my feet, so been a challenge. It's ok for the garden to look crap this time of year; we all get busy. I've been crazy mental this year with wildfires and suffered the worst burnout I have ever had in 18 years. Still tons to harvest, I've stripped most of mine out this year already to let me get on with some projects like the pond build. Great video, Clare.

  4. Millie looked thrilled with her pumpkins and the carving is fantastic! Well done Millie.

Amazing yield from your plants as always Clare.

Great video, keep up the good work and enjoy your break from Sow chatty, we will miss you!

  5. Peppers really did well here also. The orange ones took there time though. It’s strange how moving locations and how some plants do better.
I never grew comfrey before and just realized they like moist semi shade 😅 they have the opposite.

Well we finally had some hard freezes, harvested/processed the broccoli and I covered the rest of brassicas with plastic in hopes the cauliflower would finish. The temps they had shown were promising, but reality 🤷‍♀️ maybe not.

We will have a couple sunny days before clouds set in so I better get the bulbs dug, plant the garlic and clear/prep the beds for winter.
I’m looking at your produce thanking my stars I’m done with processing most everything. The weather has been too hot and dry for too long this Fall and it’s interfering with how we normally harvest and store.

Clare—Today is the last day of the 26th Annual World Run Day and it’s on the 26th🎉😅. Have your legs recovered from the last jog?😅
And another weird thing is I looked up what Kerry was talking about (Diwali) and this morning our local news mentioned one here in our state somewhere and I have Never heard about it ever, but to have it pop up just as I was chatting to Kerry about it was freaky—felt like I was being monitored 👀. Omg! I didn’t even say anything right now, just the TV is on and Seri came on like I summoned her😱🫣.
    Happy Halloween 👻🎃

  6. Where were all those capsicums (peppers) hiding, I couldn’t see many when you opened the lid. Hopeful for a good capsicum and chilli harvest like yours for my summer season, which is just starting. Did not know cabbages would regrow, definitely going to give that a go.

  7. Fantastic peppers and chillies! Amazing that so many of your chillies have ripened while ours, also in an unheated greenhouse, are mostly still green. We will of course use them regardless of colour, our freezer bag of chillies has been empty a while so it will be good to see it full again. We seem to have eaten all but 1 of the peppers, mostly when green, so will have to wait until next year for more of those. Oddly we had a few peppers that turned red early in summer, after that all we had were green fruits from the same plants until late September. I do love to see all kinds of chillies and peppers when they are ripe.
I seem to learn something from each of your vlogs. Until today I had no idea that there was a particular chilli to use for gochujang sauce! Will certainly be looking for that for next year. Will you be sharing your sauce recipe?
Very disappointed to have destroyed my entire production of tomato skin powder this year. Had inadvertently put the lot into a bottle with a cardboard liner for the lid. That liner must have been damp and as a result my beautiful red powder turned to a lump of grey mould. Not enough fresh tomatoes left to do another batch so will have to do without for a while.
Will save up my ironing until Sow Chatty returns but looking forward to your weekly vlogs until then. 💐
The overhead footage of your “pond” was lovely to see. When does a pond become a lake?

  8. Holy smokes those cabbage are huge! The pond is soooo cool! Amazing how perfect the peppers grew out. The flip poly tunnel is a great idea. The Korean chili is the BEST! The mower HAS to help with the chores. Great video Claire!!!
