Monday 20 October – harvesting beetroot, turnips and Taunton Deane Perennial kale, and discussing why we don’t eat the leaves of beetroot and turnips, and how they’re used to feed our soil;
Thursday 23 October -potting up a perennial kale cutting… and rain;
Sunday 26 October – our broad beans are on a plinth of upturned pots on our bench, as I want them cooler than in the greenhouse and also want the breeze and winds to buffet them so they strengthen, and I find out in doing so that squirrels are nabbing our carrots… I also do our final tomato harvest.
Paul’s series ‘A Week at the Plot’ is his mini vlogs of what he’s been up to at the plot each week; little and often, and all about gardening, what’s growing, being sown, harvested, enjoyed and much more at our UK No Dig allotment in West London.

Oh dear, the carrots! I think you are right, squirrels. Had it been badgers, the whole lot would have been grubbed up and devoured. Hooray you have some carrots left! So sorry Paul x
Shame about your carrots! I've tried growing a certain pumpkin a couple of times and a roadrunner stole them! They were behind a fence and we saw the roadrunner back there. I shouldn't be accusing the roadrunner without absolute proof. 😂 Anyway, your plot is so lovely with all of the Autumn goings-on.
Roasted beetroot was a revelation to me a couple of years ago! Goes lovely on a baking tray of multi veg roasted in tossted sesame oil! The leaves are not my taste but the bunnies like them at random times (oxalates!). Beans look fab..
Hiya Paul. Thankyou for sharing. Ontario Canada 🇨🇦🐝🎃
did you ever have the problem of people taking any of your garden veggies
Could you put chicken wire over your carrot bad, how annoying. Nice upgrade again too.
Thanks Paul!
I planted my carrots in a raised bed with a crop cage on top! Only way the squirrels can’t get at them. Had a great harvest this year for the first time. 😊
Thanks Paul! 😘
I don't have anything as the foxes and badgers dug everything up back in the summer, now we have break ins , to contend with
Usually mature Swiss chard and mustard greens are two of the last things critters go for in my garden. I have had seasons where I have had to totally cage the green beans to keep some for myself after having to replant. I didn’t know squirrels went for carrots, good to know. Sorry about that. There is always something interesting going on in the garden. Loved the sounds of your rain. Hang in there… takes a bit to get used to the time change. You are awesome, Paul. Maybe Richard will have a new biscuit recipe at home for you to try.❤❤❤
I share your pain, Paul….1/3 of my potted potato harvest and the tomatoes on the the lower branches of my vines were "sampled" by, possibly, rats and squirrels. Not entirely eaten …just several chomps on each item – and then on to the next. My first year EVER of having this happen. Truly frustrating!! 😡
Hi Paul, your carrots, my parsnips! Exactly the same. Just overnight, half went and the next night they all went. Not even a leaf left, just lots of digging marks and things turned over. I still dont know if it was a rat, squirrel, badger or fox, but on checking the internet it seems they all like parsnips! I've been putting chilli powder out again today. Like you, I love wildlife but sometimes enough is enough. You grow from seed, nurture those little plants and they're gone overnight. My garden pots have been dug out too last night, so they've got the chilli treatment as well. Hey ho, the joys of gardening. Thankyou for a lovely vlog as always.
They didn’t even eat them or come back for them🙁mmmm very annoying!! When you pulled up your beetroots,,I thought to myself Wow they are enormous radish this year🫣🥴I think I’m losing my marbles 🤪,,Keep warm 🌸xx
Mice can jump over a foot straight up.
I've potted up my rosemary and put in the greenhouse. Can't afford to lose it.
The squirrels always burying walnuts. I had corn seed drying and had to almost literally push it off of them.
The squirrels in my area dug up my green bean plants so they could bury acorns. Ugh. I get so frustrated by their behavior sometimes.
Have you considered fermenting some beetroot? Chopped or sliced it produces a refreshing tangy flavour for smoothies, soups and stews….or are you still sensitive to the milder lactic acid?
What makes matters even more confusing is that astronomers use “universal time” or UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). Based on GMT with the occasional atomic rotation adjustments. I suppose we need some sort of local time scales, but I agree, turning local time clocks around is unsettling.
What a lovely lot of produce Paul,beetroot looks great,that’s what I do with beetroot put it in balsamic delicious.

Paul, it is okay to use manure. In nature the animals graze the land and pee and poop as they go, then other animals come by andscratch through that spreading it out and also leaving their own aling the way. It all regenerates the soil and feeds it, just like fallen leaves and dead plants do. Nature is amazing.
Hi Paul, we had rats the gnawed round the top of some of our carrots last year & managed to pull one out & were covered with fleece & my neighbour had the same problem too, this year was fine. There was a year when something ate all our beetroot. I love turnips too & am going to my plot today to harvest some. Good vlog as usual.
I know it derailed your work, Paul. But ohh, the sound of the rain on the poly!! Just love it~ ❤
I planted my broad beans direct in ground…..using the Vivi chilli powder method….in fact I also added chippotle flakes to some of the holes too. Hope it works.
Net the carrots Paul! 🥕🐿️
Morning, Paul . Happy Monday !
How very disheartening that the squirrels are getting to the carrots . You put much labor into your efforts and I feel badly. A bit ago I was telling you about squirrels and my flower bulbs. Well , I found one of my clay pots ,which held bulbs , overturned and the bulbs scattered , by a squirrel. I watched as it ran off with a bulb. I thought of you and the beetroot. I think I give up ! They are digging everywhere . 🐿🐿🐿
BTW – peaceful ASMR , the rain on the poly roof.
Have a good week -Marilyn xx
