Growing onions from sets is a straightforward and rewarding process. Onion sets are small, immature onion bulbs that are ideal for planting as they establish quickly and produce a reliable crop. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started:
Choose the Right Location: Pick a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Onions thrive in loose soil, so prepare the area by removing weeds and breaking up compacted soil.
Prepare the Soil: Add compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil and improve drainage. Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0–7.0).
Plant the Sets: Push each onion set into the soil, pointy end up, ensuring they are spaced about 4–6 inches apart. Rows should be spaced 12 inches apart for adequate airflow. Bury them lightly; the tops can remain just above soil level.
Watering: Water the sets after planting and continue to keep the soil moist, especially during dry spells. Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can lead to rotting.
Care and Maintenance: Remove weeds regularly to prevent competition for nutrients. Apply a balanced fertilizer every few weeks to promote growth, but reduce feeding once bulbs begin to form.
Harvest: Onions are ready to harvest when the leaves start to yellow and fall over. Gently pull the onions from the soil and let them dry in the sun for a week or two to cure.
With proper care, you’ll have a healthy crop of onions to enjoy in your cooking!
