I will walk you through the 2-step troubleshooting process I use when trying to fix a water leak at the temperature and pressure relief valve on a water heater. This project is approachable by all homeowners and at least step 1 should be tried prior to calling in a professional to help save time and money on this common home repair.

Awesome video
Thank you! there was sediment stopping the valve seal. All it needed was flushing.
First part of the video solved the problem.
Thanks I sent you some dollars!!! This fixed the issue.
Thanks!
I had to replace my pressure valve but because of your video it gave me the confidence to do it myself and I did it successfully thank you very much
Did both and it still leaks
I need to buy a makita shop vac before I try this
Great video very helpful.
Please help ! I have stage 4 cancer and low income and cant afford to hire an expert so need to try to fix myself. I drained my electric hot water heater and i turned back on the cold water supply to my water heater but my water tank isnt filling what could be wrong? I have no water at all coming out of the hot water faucet in any room but still have cold water. I have no idea what to do ! When i turn the valve to the cold water outlet valve on water heater i dont hear any eater coming out to go to the tank 😢
I don't have a small leak it's like dripping out of the pressure valve pipe and flooded a puddle in my basement 😢 do you think cleaning my tank out may resolve the issue? Another thing when I shut the water off to the water heater it stopped leaking. Please help ! Have stage 4 cancer and disabled and can't afford to pay someone to fix I need to try to do this on my own if possible. Thanks so much!!
Yay! I fixed it. It was the sediment issue.
Thank you sooo very much!
GREAT JOB SCOTT, USED YOUR INSTRUCTIONS & FLUSHED VALVE W / PEROXIDE & BAKING SODA !!! CLEANED IT LIKE NEW!! VALVE WORKS FINE NO LEAKS . HOT WATER YEAH THKS. SCOTT
My valve is leaking water slowly. Is the thermal coupler a cause of this or should the pressure valve should also be replaced if leaking. However it seems like you are describing the clogged valve is not leaking. The opposite of what I am saying is going on.
I agree with the majority🎉 well done. Everyone who has the means should tip this guy for the money we saved. Thanks guy
Great video! Learned something new. Thanks.
thank you so much!!!❤
Thank you! Flushing appears to have worked. My drain exits the garage and drains outside, so I didn't notice any gradual leaks. The last few days, however, I was surprised to see my front walkway all wet after running the dishwasher, doing laundry, or taking a shower. Panic set in, but at least the inside of my garage wasn't soaking wet. Thank goodness I had subscribed to your channel in the past for something else, and this video popped right up. I was hesitant to try messing with it myself because I didn't want to make the situation worse. A couple of flicks on the valve did nothing, so I finally just opened it up and let it run for 5-10 seconds. Did that a couple of times. It seemed to work, but it was well past midnight, so I went to bed. Took a shower this morning and was keeping my fingers crossed. Went out front after the shower. Dry walkway! Can't thank you enough. I didn't know about exercising the valve, but I do now.
The first one fixed my issue. Sediment build up on the hot water heater's pressure temperature release valve. Flushed it 3 times at full tilt and is back to proper function. Thank you.
The flushing worked perfectly, successfully stopping the leak in the valve.
Why is it leaking? Because you don’t have an expansion tank and the relief valve which isn’t meant to function that way and ONLY in emergency cases. As water heats up it expands as tries to displace 2 gallons of water, if it can’t go somewhere it will use the relief valve ( which is meant for only extreme high pressure to prevent explosions) or a close by toilet valve or faucet.
As it cools down pressure lowers.
Also if you have a pressure regulator without an expansion tank then the pressure becomes locked and can’t relieve itself through the cold water line like it did in previous times.
So excited I found this before ordering a new water heater! Hope it works for me! 🤞🤞
I changed the valve and still leaking down the side of the tank. Thinking i need more Teflon tape for a better seal-any suggestions?
If you pull the pressure valve and water comes out, do you continue to drain the whole thing??
