What to Sow in Mid-June | Succession Planting & Seed Tray Tips for Temperate Climates

Keep the momentum going in your garden by sowing seeds now, even in mid to late June. In this video, I show what vegetables you can still sow in a temperate climate, using seed trays in the greenhouse. It’s all part of succession planting—keeping your garden full and productive through the summer and beyond.

You’ll see examples of lettuce, beetroot, celery, brassicas like Brussels sprouts, and carrots. I also share practical tips on compost (I don’t use special seed compost), potting on, and how to plan ahead with interplanting.

🌱 Always raise more plants than you think you’ll need—space tends to appear when you’re ready for it.

  1. Not gonna lie, I find this very encouraging. I got started quite late with growing things and figured even if I didn’t produce all that much I would still give it a go and it seems to be going okay. I get a bit hung up on seed packet dates but I reckon I should live dangerously and keep planting what I enjoy growing.

One thing I’ve gone a bit bonkers with is lettuce. They EVERYWHERE. But I’ve lined up a friend who will be happy to accept the ones I won’t have room for in my garden.

  2. This was my mistake in first year. I realized to keep sowing or like I think always have seeds in soil. Plants die from disease and insect impact unexpectedly and you want to replace as well as to use space optimally. I’m in southern hemisphere so the winter is not much destructive, plants just stall a bit and take off once warmer.

  3. I’ve found the easiest ever way to propagate lettuce. Just let a head run to seed, and in the next few months they come up everywhere. I grow red lettuce, so it all looks quite atteactive
This only works in the cooler months, given lettuce don’t like temps above 20C.

  4. Thank you, Charles! I have not been gardening for a while, since I received your calendar, due to sickness, but I am back and is still using that calendar and I do keep sowing. Lettuce, spinach etc. they don’t have a chance to bolt cause we eat them when they have grown enough.

  5. Nice thing, companion planting and interplantinthe beds before cropping the first harvest…. Sadly I‘ m going on holiday now and it‘y a little difficult to delegate propagation on friens who are content with watering your garden😅

Thanks Charles, and greetings from Germany 🙋🏻‍♀️

  6. How I wish to be at your level. Thank you for your wisdom and encouragement! Maybe one day I'll get there! Happy to hear I can do celery still… just found one of mine starting to bolt and worry the others may follow

  7. I am growing weird & wonderful things from seed this year Dragon's Egg Cucumber ( the fruit really does looks otherwordly). Tasted ok – very pleasant & Orange Chard. A rosie apple like coloured tomato & tiny Currant tomatos. 4 different species of cucumber. I've sown so much I can't keep up with myself- I 'm here I'm there, I'm everywhere! Can't sit down
The contrast to last year when I lost so much to slugs & snails because my garden is south fast but very sheltered so big battles- alot trees & greenery. I think I have been somewhat ambitious !

Tbh, I am nearly too exhausted to sow anymore 🥵….but will try keep going. Got some brussell sprouts taking off though & Broccoli. Trying inter planting for first time. But with succession planting – I am not quite there with that yet. Need more experience of that.

What's weird is I don't really want to eat it all but I get so much pleasure growing from seed.

  8. I needed this short message. I put some peppers and strawberries as well as potatos and garlic but i feel im so late…maybe just flowers will make it…i dont have a decent greenhouse. Brasicas could be a good experiment

  9. Got an allotment this year and I’m really struggling to get plants in and clear it. Ive managed to build 7 beds, having to clear the soil as it has a lot of rubbish and while I’m there I’m removing roots in which I want removing. It’s my fault for not replacing old seed, not keeping on top of the watering.
