Keep the momentum going in your garden by sowing seeds now, even in mid to late June. In this video, I show what vegetables you can still sow in a temperate climate, using seed trays in the greenhouse. It’s all part of succession planting—keeping your garden full and productive through the summer and beyond.
You’ll see examples of lettuce, beetroot, celery, brassicas like Brussels sprouts, and carrots. I also share practical tips on compost (I don’t use special seed compost), potting on, and how to plan ahead with interplanting.
🌱 Always raise more plants than you think you’ll need—space tends to appear when you’re ready for it.

Not gonna lie, I find this very encouraging. I got started quite late with growing things and figured even if I didn’t produce all that much I would still give it a go and it seems to be going okay. I get a bit hung up on seed packet dates but I reckon I should live dangerously and keep planting what I enjoy growing.
One thing I’ve gone a bit bonkers with is lettuce. They EVERYWHERE. But I’ve lined up a friend who will be happy to accept the ones I won’t have room for in my garden.
I don't grow cauliflower, cabbage and letus because of caterpillars.
This was my mistake in first year. I realized to keep sowing or like I think always have seeds in soil. Plants die from disease and insect impact unexpectedly and you want to replace as well as to use space optimally. I’m in southern hemisphere so the winter is not much destructive, plants just stall a bit and take off once warmer.
I always learn so much from you. Thank you!
Nice roots
Seeds are powerful little things ✨️
Technically, some little seeds create #Hardy plants, and others are not so hardy
Thank you! I've been away and thought this year was a write off… Maybe it isn't 👍🏽😊
I’ve found the easiest ever way to propagate lettuce. Just let a head run to seed, and in the next few months they come up everywhere. I grow red lettuce, so it all looks quite atteactive
This only works in the cooler months, given lettuce don’t like temps above 20C.
When I forget or just don't have time then I put in some cover crops. Always better to have something growing in the soil if at all possible.
Thank you, Charles! I have not been gardening for a while, since I received your calendar, due to sickness, but I am back and is still using that calendar and I do keep sowing. Lettuce, spinach etc. they don’t have a chance to bolt cause we eat them when they have grown enough.
Tienes toda la razón.Me faltan plantas muchas veces y las tengo que comprar en invernaderos.Saludos 👌🏻🌸🌶️🍅🥕🐞👏🐈🐈
And if you have too many share the love with neighbours and family 🙏
Nice thing, companion planting and interplantinthe beds before cropping the first harvest…. Sadly I‘ m going on holiday now and it‘y a little difficult to delegate propagation on friens who are content with watering your garden😅
Thanks Charles, and greetings from Germany 🙋🏻♀️
After sewing your lettuce in the small trays, do you pot each one on into a plastic module?
How I wish to be at your level. Thank you for your wisdom and encouragement! Maybe one day I'll get there! Happy to hear I can do celery still… just found one of mine starting to bolt and worry the others may follow
Is there still time for sowing runner beans outside? I haven't gotten around to sowing them yet 😢
I am growing weird & wonderful things from seed this year Dragon's Egg Cucumber ( the fruit really does looks otherwordly). Tasted ok – very pleasant & Orange Chard. A rosie apple like coloured tomato & tiny Currant tomatos. 4 different species of cucumber. I've sown so much I can't keep up with myself- I 'm here I'm there, I'm everywhere! Can't sit down
The contrast to last year when I lost so much to slugs & snails because my garden is south fast but very sheltered so big battles- alot trees & greenery. I think I have been somewhat ambitious !
Tbh, I am nearly too exhausted to sow anymore 🥵….but will try keep going. Got some brussell sprouts taking off though & Broccoli. Trying inter planting for first time. But with succession planting – I am not quite there with that yet. Need more experience of that.
What's weird is I don't really want to eat it all but I get so much pleasure growing from seed.
Great advice! Kepp sowing…
I needed this short message. I put some peppers and strawberries as well as potatos and garlic but i feel im so late…maybe just flowers will make it…i dont have a decent greenhouse. Brasicas could be a good experiment
How often are you watering the seedlings in the greenhouse? My greenhouse has been reaching over 30c even with all windows vents and doors open.
Ive been struggling with my seeds in the porch.
I’ve ordered a heat mat and light and a fan to assist.
They all seem to be very leggy
I’m curious about lettuce varieties you are sowing now?
Tried Batavia’s but nothing sprouted (possibly too old) and another variety that also didn’t germinate very well…
Got an allotment this year and I’m really struggling to get plants in and clear it. Ive managed to build 7 beds, having to clear the soil as it has a lot of rubbish and while I’m there I’m removing roots in which I want removing. It’s my fault for not replacing old seed, not keeping on top of the watering.
I see. Thank,s for answer
Thank you I am quite successful but only thanks to your advice😊
Bom dia obrigado ❤
Great advice! Thank you❤
What about the snails? My plantlings are being throughly eaten…
