I created a vertical garden that fits in any small space, allowing you to be more self sufficient and produce some of your own food.
MATERIALS:
1 x 12” plastic pipe
1 x tape measure
1 x sharpie
Hand saw or electric
12 x strawberry plant
Spray paint (optional)
Organic compost
STEP BY STEP:
– Measure and mark out spaces every 15 cm on your plastic pipe going from one side to the other (one mark left, one mark right and so on)
– Cut an horizontal slit on every mark around 10 cm wide
– Turn on your heat gun and carefully warm up the area where you made your first slit. Hold it far enough to not overheat the plastic and cause bubbles.
– Once warm enough use a bottle to open the slit and hold it in place until the plastic turns solid again (repeat for every slit)
– I used an old pot to close the bottom part of the strawberry tower using the heat gun (it already has drainage holes)
– Optional: spray paint the tower now and leave it to dry completely
– Hang the tower in any balcony, terrace, garden etc. Ideally in a well lit area
– Start from the bottom and fill every hole with your compost
– Make some space with your hands to fit your strawberry plants
– Water every hole and wait until your plants starts producing food 🍓

Annnnnnnd just like that as I was cleaning out some old pvc pipe the other day I found two full ten foot lengths! Tomorrow morning I start yet another addition to my fruit plants saving space. I recently made a 6/4/2 (feet) triple ring tower for my strawberry plants and it came out awesome. With the remaining plants I now have a “space saving” thought to make two six/seven foot towers instead of adding another raised bed. I changed over ALL my beds over the years to (Hugelkulture) raised beds, it helps clear yard waste and saves soil because all those branches, leaves and grass clippings make an awesome nutritious base for each bed and more importantly I save wear and tear on my back and knees doing all that bending and crawling around on the ground. Years ago I made a few upright tube planters (for cukes and a maxamillion cherry tomato plants)but after a storm having a tree come down and smash them all into junk I just stayed with raising them up for comfort. The tomato’s were the easiest, I literally stuck a small tomato in each pocket in the fall and come springtime they started sprouting and grew very well. I’ve sliced a beefsteak tomato and placed the rounds under about a half inch of soil and they grew great too. Anyway, Thanks for the reminder brother, it’s eleven PM now and I just came back inside to hear “NOW what are you doing there my midnight gardener?!” The wife cracks me up, she followed with “you being out back with a head lamp on and carrying a shovel the neighbors are gonna think you’re out there burying bodies🤣!
Ok I’ll shaddup now, just all excited to get these made tomorrow in DAYLIGHT .👍🏼👍🏼✌🏼May your gardens grow big bounties my friend!
Any tips on keeping birds and squirrels and mice away?
How do you water it
Nice! Where did you get the PVC pipes, @SpicyMoustache? A link would help – I'd like to try it myself!!!
Total beginner here but do I fill the whole pipe with soil? I've only just seen these towers that are on sale and not sure how the watering would work
This is awesome
cool video
Will strawberry plants survive the winter in these tubes? I'm in Chicago and am trying to find a space for my strawberries that will also survive the winters here…
Can you do a DIY instructable on how you made this?
Are there any containers inside the tower? Or does the compost just fall through all the slits to the bottom?
I probably dont understand how vertical farm plots work…
do you fill it with dirt?
I disapprove of spray painting it, the plants will bush out to cover the white or whatever color PVC pipe you got.
My wife and I live in Arkansas USA and we are currently in an apartment. Watching your tips helped us plant a decent garden on our 2nd story balcony
Waste of time.
Not enough soil inside.
Problem with water draining to the bottom
Need constant watering and adding artificial fertilizer
But then convicts have lots of time
What's the distance between each hole?
How did you make the tube green?
Your accent is a mix of British, French, and Italian.
Whats the name of the plastic softening machine?
Please do audio books your voice is such a vibe🙏 I stop to watch every video of yours I see, it's so pure and honest ❤
You’re such an inspiration ❤🙏🏼
