In this video, Clare (formerly The Veg Plot Thickens) takes you along with her as she starts to plant out her April crops in her vegetable garden as she embarks on her quest to move closer to self sufficiency and less reliant on supermarket produce. The aim is for abundant harvests during 2024 and beyond.
In this episode brassicas are planted, spring planting onion sets are planted out and swedes are sown. Clare also shows you around what else is growing in the kitchen garden allotment and asks for your advice on what to do with the asparagus bed. Any thoughts?
There is also a lovely harvest of overwintered produce in there’s polytunnel and planting up the summer hanigjng baskets.
Clare and her family live on their farm in Staffordshire, England, where they garden 270sq/m of vegetable garden as well as trying to maintain and improve the previously neglected gardens around their farm house.

Really enjoyed watching this
All’ your plants are looking very healthy and happy! Great result with your carrots! Little carrots are far tastier than the bigger ones I find. I love hanging baskets, they always brighten up a garden! Plenty of brassicas in the ground, you will get such a good harvest. Duncan has worked so hard, great system to deal with the flooding! Your onions are looking brilliant! All your beautiful beds are filling up nicely! 😘🌸💕
Those carrots in the polytunnel look great.
I grew Kalettes last year and they grow quite big so you may find you need to raise the cover on the bed as they grow or top them
PSB looks great too. I would be tempted to buy another asparagus crown to be honest. One more can’t hurt either way
Lovely update have a fab week 😊
Watched on Saturday morning but forgot to comment! Great video Clare. Loving the drone shots. Isn't it great to start getting crops into the ground outside!
Ooh those carrots look a treat!
you can harvest asparagus 3years after planting 😊
I love your channel and your veg garden, it gives me lots of ideas. I want to build a robust trellis arch for squashes, is your arch cemented into the ground or is it just dug into the ground. I'm currently in a debate with my partner over the best option😁
All looking wonderful 🙂It would be really helpful Clare if you could link your metal hoops and the cloches 🌻
First, where are you and don't say U.K., which part then I can give you all the advice you need as gardened in U.K. professionally for 40 years. Am now in Portugal where the weather is a far cry from U.K. and I can get 2 crops a year even in the high mountains. First if in the Northern 1/2 your onion sets need to be planted mid March not April, unless the weather stops you. The rest, well just ask and you shall receive.
You have a such a lovely channel Clare. So much space and resources, the garden is developing beautifully.
Hopefully the drainage will have done the job for next winters onslaught of rain. Well done Duncan 🎉
Stunning hangers. Love the drone shots.
Bit disappointed a pair of glasses weren’t in your pocket along with the gloves and hori 😂😂
Loved the plot tour and your impressive camera skills ❤❤
Dunc the Digger can he fix it!
Dunc the Digger Yes he can!
…Duncan – What about you doing us a pretty hanging basket? Get that feminine creative side going 😂😂
The colour on that overwintered chard, wow! 🤩 I have massive greenhouse envy 🤣 all the beautiful staging with little seedlings on top, love it!!
My brassicas were hungry plants last year a couple of handfuls of manure pellets won't harm them 🥰❤️x
I think the same sometimes about buying starters especially if one only need 6 or so of a plant. I do it for sprouts. Things have definitely over wintered really well in the poly. Could you just shorten the chains on the shelf and “hang” it closer to the ceiling. Would save having to find a place for it. Lettuce looks great 💪. Baskets of flowers are gorgeous but I see yiur in a winter coat again 😢. It’s really cold here but still no rain 🌧️ maybe tonight they said. Asparagus is just slow patience little one 😂 and you can always buy more as a back up 😂. Great tench Sir Duncan of the Shorts 👍👍. Have a fabulous weekend and hope it warms up, Ali 🥶🥶🌞🇨🇦
You never ran 10k!?😉😂❤️
20:26 those trellis are beautiful
Love floating shelves.Plants doing really well Clare ❤
Those hanging baskets are going to look absolutely gorgeous 😍
Yum purple Sprouting Broccoli. Only tried eating it this year but not sown any seeds for it yet! 😂 Have a great weekend ❤
Morning Clare
Exciting and busy time around the farm and plot.
Hope you have a great weekend.
Your harvests are great for the hungry gap. Well done
What a lovely plot you got . Enjoy your video John from Scotland
The plot is looking so good. It is great to have the resources to make a whole garden from scratch. Ours had to evolve over years and so it is all a bit chaotic.
Decent harvest of carrots, nice one!
I put my little table and chair (wicker bargains from the auctions) in exactly the same spot. I used to spend ages sitting there enjoying the view of my crops, reading garden mag and making plans. I dont seem to have time now.
I absolutely adore brassica flowers.
